kajetanerplatz

Welcome to the Kajetan Square!

Kajetanerplatz is one of those places where you can suddenly find yourself lingering for hours – even though you only intended to pass through briefly. Surrounded by charming old buildings, bars, cafés and small shops selling things you don't need but simply must have, the motto here is: ‘Treat yourself’.

History with baroque style

The square is named after the magnificent 17th-century Kajetaner church. It used to be a Jesuit monastery before it passed into the possession of the Kajetanians. And today? It's a secret Instagram tip with its magnificent façade and interior – featuring a fantastic fresco in the dome – which exudes sacred tranquillity and baroque flair.

Chill zone instead of tourist hustle

What makes Kajetanerplatz so special? Its relaxed atmosphere away from the selfie crowds of Getreidegasse. This is where locals and tourists meet to enjoy the fact that, in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can simply... take a deep breath.  Like in the historic Hinterbrühl inn (mentioned as early as the 14th century!) or one of the nice bars and cafés in the surrounding area, or simply while shopping for charming ‘must-haves’.

And now: counting steps with a view

Anyone who thinks Kajetanerplatz is just for strolling around is mistaken – this is the starting point for one of the most charming paths to Hohensalzburg Fortress: the Nonnbergstiege. Yes, exactly, a little workout for your calves. But you will be rewarded with a view that could be straight out of a romantic historical film. Cobblestones, old walls, a touch of ‘Sound of Music’ feeling (Nonnberg Abbey, hello!) – and at some point everything clears and Salzburg lies at your feet.

And the best thing? Everything is within walking distance!

Mozart's birthplace? Just around the corner. Salzburg Cathedral? Five minutes away. Dom Quarter? A short walk away. Kajetanerplatz is, so to speak, the quiet heartbeat in the middle of Salzburg's hustle and bustle – and the perfect starting point for anyone who wants to combine history, beauty and a little escape from everyday life.

Conclusion:

Kajetanerplatz is like a hidden track on your favourite album – not as well known as the hits, but often the best part of the whole thing. So, grab a coffee, switch to strolling mode and discover the relaxed side of the old town. Salzburg feeling at its best.
