Good Vibes & Cold Rides: Surfer-Life in Salzburg

Sounds like a joke at first – but it’s a real thing for Salzburg’s surf community! If you think you have to travel far for the perfect wave, you probably haven’t heard of the Almwelle in Salzburg-Gneis.

Here, right in the Almkanal, you’ll find true freedom on a surfboard. A wooden ramp creates the right flow, and since it was upgraded as a training spot for surfers and paddlers, there’s always something going on. From early summer to late autumn, a colorful mix of hobby surfers and seasoned pros gathers here – some bundled up in wetsuits, others casually in swim trunks.

The Almwelle proves that surfing isn’t just for the ocean and offers the perfect mix of challenge and fun. Two adjustable spoilers shape the wave, making it suitable for all skill levels. At 0.5 meters high and just 4.5 meters wide, the wave can accommodate a maximum of two surfers at a time. So if you're looking for a real adrenaline rush, grab a board and give it a try. Getting there from HOTEL andrä is easy by public transport: Take Obus line 5 to the final stop “Birkensiedlung,” then follow the canal 150 meters toward the city.
